When a new intraocular (IOL) lens option is released into the market, it is always a big day in ophthalmology. And just within the last two weeks, the FDA approved a new exciting option for patients.
On August 27, 2019, it was announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the AcrySof®IQ PanOptix®Trifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL) by Alcon, the first and only trifocal lens for U.S. patients undergoing cataract surgery.
The PanOptix lens is clinically shown to deliver an exceptional combination of near, intermediate and distance vision while significantly reducing the need for glasses after surgery.
Dr. Slade & Dr. Walton have both been part of the roll-out of the new Trifocal IOL and have already implanted these lenses at our clinic last week.
The Trifocal lens is in the same family of IOL technologies that we have been using for years at Slade & Baker Vision, but with the added benefit that it gets better near vision and intermediate vision than previous models. What is intermediate vision you ask? Answer: around 1 meter away from our eyes.
This is a great option for people who want to be able to see at multiple distances at the same time, which a basic, standard, monofocal IOL cannot do.
This lens was basically designed for today’s patients with active lifestyles. It is mean to help you view mobile devices and computer screens to high-quality distance vision in a range of lighting conditions.
A key difference here is also that the Trifocal is supposed to keep the distance vision as good as we see with those other lenses that have been used by surgeons for years.
If you are a skeptic (which some of us are with new technology) it is also important to note that the press release which announced the commercial launch of PanOptix explained that this lens is already one of the leading presbyopia-correcting IOLs in more than 70 other countries!
We are proud to be part of the improvement in visual options for our patients!
Please remember that the most important thing when having cataract surgery or getting any kind of lens implanted, is going to a surgeon who is experienced in all the different options.
When you have surgeons like Dr. Slade and Dr. Walton, who have had the experience with the other lenses in the market, take part in the research to get approval for new lenses, and implant newly approved lenses as well, you get the best of every world. Experience with the old and the new – and the offerings of the latest in all.
Excited to hear more? Please keep in mind that you may be a candidate for the Trifocal, or for a completely different lens for a different reason.
