In any field, there are experts, and there are leaders – but what really makes someone stand out as a leader in their field? Is it the knowledge and skills it takes to do what they do every day? What makes them ‘better than most’ at what they do?
Many would argue, this lies in the ability to educate others and help further the knowledge in their field.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, there are over 19,000 ophthalmologists in the United States, and many of those surgeons keep up to date with the latest techniques and state of the art technology for the surgeries they offer at various conferences and continuing medical education courses. However, only a few actually have the ability and take the time to educate other surgeons. Education is something we hear about on a daily basis here at Slade & Baker Vision, so we wanted to share a little bit about what our surgeons have done for other surgeons because when patients look us up and read about us, one of the things they always highlight is that they didn’t realize how involved we were outside of our surgery center and clinic. We wanted this article to provide a little background into the professional lives of our two surgeons, outside of our walls!
Dr. Stephen Slade is the Chief Medical Editor Emeritus Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today, and has served on various editorial boards globally, which include the Journal of Refractive and Corneal Surgery, Ocular Surgery News, Oftalmologia Em FOCO and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr. Slade has also served as Medical Director and Medical Monitor for various new technologies, lenses, and lasers, served on various Advisory boards for the development of these technologies, been a part of an FDA Panel for approval of technologies and products, has served on the Board of Directors, served as a Program Chair for an incredible number of educational programs in corneal and refractive surgery and served as Chief Investigator for various clinical trials. In each of these positions, Dr. Slade has taught or influenced. Last but certainly not least, as the FIRST surgeon to perform LASIK in the United States, Dr. Slade has also taught, instructed, and overseen countless surgeons in refractive surgery. Beyond leading the pack, he has made it a point to educate and use his knowledge of refractive surgery, the ins and outs, complications, to teach the next generation.
Dr. Bennett Walton has dedicated quite a bit of his time to educating in the field of cornea and refractive surgery as well. Dr. Walton currently sits on the Editorial Advisory Board at Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today, the Editorial Board at Millennial Eye, the Advisory Board at Ophthalmology 360 and as a Founding Member of The Oracle Vision Council. Due to his own extensive education and training, Dr. Walton has recognized the importance of education and made sure to give back as a part of his career. He attended Vanderbilt University, completed a Hospital Administration Internship, received his MBA from Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business and graduated with his Medical Doctor Degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed a combined medical and surgical internship at Houston Methodist Hospital and completed his ophthalmology residency at Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine. After residency, he completed his fellowship in Corneal, Refractive and Anterior Segment Surgery.
Dr. Walton has presented and educated from the podium and surgical practice labs while at The American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery (AECOS) and The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), among other organizations and events. Dr. Walton instructed over 200 residents and early career surgeons in cataract and anterior segment surgery techniques through ASCRS and Combined Specialized Education courses.
Needless to say, it’s pretty obvious our two surgeons keep themselves pretty busy! When they are not seeing patients and treating our patients’ vision, they are busy educating, which we are so proud of. We know they leave a legacy with each and every one of the patients they help, but we also know that they are both leaving a legacy and guiding the future surgeons in the field of ophthalmology who will have their chance to help so many patients restore their sight.
