Slade & Baker Vision

At Slade & Baker Vision, we are dedicated to pioneering advancements in eye care that make a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients. Recently, we had the privilege of being part of an extraordinary journey with one of our patients, whose experience with glaucoma led to a remarkable breakthrough in treatment: the iDose implant by Glaukos.

Glaucoma, often referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” is a progressive eye disease that can lead to irreversible vision loss if left untreated. For our patient, managing glaucoma had been a challenging journey. Despite diligent efforts with medications, the intraocular pressure remained difficult to control, placing his vision at risk.

Enter Dr. Nikitha Reddy, our esteemed refractive and glaucoma surgeon at Slade & Baker Vision. Dr. Reddy is fellowship-trained in Glaucoma and Advanced Anterior Segment Surgery. With her expertise and dedication to delivering exceptional care, Dr. Reddy recommended the patient for the iDose procedure, a groundbreaking innovation developed by Glaukos. The iDose implant offers a novel approach to managing glaucoma by continuously delivering medication directly to the eye, providing sustained relief from intraocular pressure. It is a 1.8 x 0.5 mm biocompatible titanium implant that releases a proprietary formulation of travoprost inside the anterior chamber.  By eluting the medication inside the eye, it bypasses the barrier of corneal permeability, allowing the device to release micro-amounts of the active drug molecule over time. Drug delivery devices for glaucoma are becoming more popular to help address the issues that result from being dependent on frequent topical glaucoma medications and eye drops.

The patient’s surgery with Dr. Reddy marked a significant milestone for our practice and for glaucoma care in Texas. As the 4th surgeon in the state to perform the iDose implantation in Texas and one of less than 20 surgeons across the USA to do so, Dr. Reddy exemplifies our commitment to staying at the forefront of ophthalmic advancements.

Following the procedure, our patient’s recovery was smooth, and the results have been great. At our annual Continuing Education meeting, which our practice hosts for our community of eye care specialists, eye doctors from across Houston had the opportunity to examine the patient postoperatively and were excited to see the results. With the intraocular pressure effectively managed, daily medication usage eliminated, and his vision preserved, our patient is thrilled with the outcome of his surgical experience. His journey serves as a testament to the transformative impact of innovative treatments like the iDose implant, offering hope and improved quality of life for individuals living with glaucoma.

At Slade & Baker Vision, we are immensely proud to have played a part in his success story and to continue our mission of providing exceptional eye care that transforms lives. As we celebrate this remarkable achievement, we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of possibility in ophthalmology and delivering unparalleled care to our patients.
