Have you ever been told that taking off your glasses and giving your eyes ‘a break’ will help your eyesight or vision get better? FALSE. Do Carrots help your eyesight? TRUE.
In a recent New York Times article, the best and worst habits in eyesight were tackled by experts. We know we get a lot of these questions in our office at Slade & Baker Vision, so it was great to see them all addressed and want to share a few key ones in our latest blog.

Although the lights from our devices and phones have gotten a lot of flak lately, and it has been proven that looking up close to a device and reading on it is bad, it is false that reading in the dark is bad for your eyesight. The above will strain your eyesight, but these symptoms are usually temporary.
It is also false that blue light is damaging; Research has found that exposure to blue light can damage the retina and potentially cause vision problems over time, but according to the NY Times article, there is no solid evidence that confirms this happens with typical blue light exposure in humans.
That being said, we do recognize that dry eyes can come of too much use from screens.
There is one type of light that was found to be harmful to our eyesight and that should not be too much of a shocker to our readers: ultraviolet light can harm eyesight. It can actually cause irreversible damage” to the retina, and as previously reported in our blogs, it is known to cause or exacerbate cataract formation. Moral of this story: wear appropriate sunglasses!
Lastly, we will leave this on a healthy tip: eat carrots and stop smoking! Another non-shocker from the article is that smoking is bad for eye health and an antioxidant rich diet helps. Even though eating carrots won’t give you HD vision, the rich vitamins in carrots and other healthy foods have been shown to slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration. Since smoking has been found to damage sensitive tissues in the eyes including the retina, lens and macula, it is proven to cause cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Final moral of this story, staying healthy and eating helps everything, including your eyesight.
