As Cataract Awareness Month comes to an end, we just wanted to remind our patients, followers and friends of some quick notes on Cataracts
- Cataracts don’t only happen to people with old age. We commonly see people with cataracts in their 40’s. There are also traumatic cataracts and pediatric cataracts.
- Cataracts have been linked to excessive UV rays and exposure to sunlight
- Cataracts happen to everyone (if you live long enough), including animals
- Cataracts affect the way you see colors, making things appear faded or ‘yellow’
- One of the most common things we hear after a patient has cataract surgery is – everything looks so colorful! You are seeing true colors!
- Cataracts are just a clouding of your natural lens
- Cataract surgery removes your lens and replaces it with a new artificial lens
- Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the nation
- Cataract surgery is one of the safest procedures in the world
- We now have Laser cataract surgery, we were the first in the US to do this.
- Early cataract surgery (before the cataract fully forms and has affected your vision to a certain extent) has been used to end presbyopia which is what many people get in their 40’s where they cannot read up close – this surgery is called Refractive Lens Exchange or RLE and it is POPULAR—it is essentially early cataract surgery so it is not covered by insurance
