Forbes recently did an article cited here discussing why people should spend their money on experiences and not possessions. They found that the experiences of life brought more joy and memories than buying material “stuff”. Our brains quickly adjust to those new items, which become simply another outdated item in our home or driveway. The article resonated with me because I’ve had that experience of the fleeting happiness a new possession offers.
In the past few years, I’ve tried to prioritize my budget on experiences rather than possessions. I’ve been fortunate enough to swim with the whale sharks in Mexico. I’ve eaten lunch at an open-air restaurant in the hills of Eastern Europe. I hiked a mountain in Australia and swam with sea turtles in the Virgin Islands. No one can ever take those experiences or those memories away from me, and I did them all without glasses or contacts. No hassling with salt water ruining my contacts or nasty eye infections that caused me to spend my vacation time searching for an eye doctor overseas. No fumbling with glasses or foggy, smudged lenses. I didn’t deal with any of that, and I’m so happy that I saw the world through my own eyes. I was able to experience new cultures and discover new people and places completely worry-free. Well, other than the worries of whether the water was safe to drink or what exactly was in the local cuisine, but that’s another discussion completely.
