Eye Doctor Houston
Dr. Shama Essa was born in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in northern Virginia. She graduated with highest honors from the University of Virginia with a bachelor of science in both biochemistry and psychology and a minor in Spanish. She attended the University of Houston College of Optometry and graduated summa cum laude with a Doctorate in Optometry. She is currently a Texas Optometry Board licensed Therapeutic Optometrist and a certified Optometric Glaucoma Specialist.
Throughout optometry school, Dr. Essa received multiple awards for her excellence in cornea and contact lens fitting, including recognition for fitting soft, rigid, and complex lenses. Dr. Essa also received numerous letters of excellence for her success and she was inducted to the Beta Sigma Kappa honor society for her outstanding educational accomplishments and was chosen to receive the Best Grand Rounds Award in her graduating class.
Dr. Essa’s externship clinical training began with a specialty dry eye clinic, where she focused on the treatment of dry eye disease of varying severity and she was heavily immersed in the treatment of ocular disease and the management of cataract and refractive surgery patients.
Following optometry school, Dr. Essa completed a residency, specializing in ocular disease and refractive and ocular surgery at the Eye Center of Texas, a medical private practice, working alongside ophthalmologists focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with dry eyes, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and more.
At Slade & Baker Vision Center, Dr. Essa performs comprehensive eye examinations, cataract evaluations, identifies refractive surgery candidates, provides pre- and post-operative care of surgical patients, and fits both simple and specialty contact lenses.
Dr. Essa is also a part-time clinical faculty member at the University of Houston College of Optometry as an Adjunct Assistant Professor, serving as an attending doctor in the Family Practice clinic.
Dr. Essa speaks fluent Spanish, conversational Urdu and Hindi, and enjoys traveling. She is happily married and lives in Sugar Land, TX.
